Travel across Turkmenistan from Shavat to Farap, exploring Kunya-Urgench, the Darvaza Gas Crater, Ashgabat and ancient Merv on a fascinating 5-day Silk Road journey.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Shavat Border → Dashoguz → Kunya-Urgench → Dashoguz

Meet your guide at the Shavat–Dashoguz border crossing and complete the entry formalities. Continue to Kunya-Urgench, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important medieval cities of the Silk Road.

Visit its principal monuments, including the Kutlug Timur Minaret, Turabek Khanum Mausoleum, Sultan Tekesh Mausoleum and Il Arslan Mausoleum. Afterwards, return to Dashoguz and check in at the hotel.

Overnight in Dashoguz.

Day 2 – Dashoguz → Darvaza Gas Crater

After breakfast at the hotel, spend time at Dashoguz city and have lunch, after lunch depart through the Karakum Desert towards the legendary Darvaza Gas Crater.

Arrive at the desert camp in the afternoon and watch the crater become increasingly dramatic at sunset. Enjoy a traditional barbecue dinner near the crater and experience the peaceful atmosphere of the Karakum Desert.

Overnight in a tent or yurt camp near Darvaza.

Day 3 – Darvaza → Ashgabat

After breakfast at the camp, drive to Ashgabat. Upon arrival, begin a sightseeing tour of Turkmenistan’s white-marble capital.

Visit Independence Park, the Monument of Neutrality, the Ruhy Mosque and other important landmarks. In the evening, enjoy an Ashgabat Night Tour featuring the city’s beautifully illuminated monuments.

Overnight in Ashgabat.

Day 4 – Ashgabat → Mary

After breakfast, continue exploring Ashgabat with visits to the National Museum, Old Nisa and other highlights, depending on opening hours and available time.

In the afternoon, drive to Mary through the historic Silk Road region. Optional stops may include the Seyit Jemaleddin Mosque ruins in Anau and the ancient settlement of Abiwerd. Arrive in Mary and check in at the hotel.

Overnight in Mary.

Day 5 – Mary → Ancient Merv → Farap Border

After breakfast, travel to Ancient Merv, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and once one of the largest and most influential cities along the Silk Road.

Explore the archaeological complex, including Greater and Lesser Kyz Kala, Erk Kala, Gyaur Kala, Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum and Muhammad ibn Zayd Mausoleum.

After the excursion, continue to the Farap–Alat border crossing. Assistance with departure formalities and crossing into Uzbekistan.

End of the tour.
